Eldest of 13 children, Thuan “Scotty” Nguyen (pronounced “win”) was born October 28, 1962 in war-torn Vietnam. At the tender age of 11, Scotty fled to Taiwan, where he spent nearly 3 years living in a refugee camp awaiting a sponsor family from the United States. At 14, Scotty arrived in the U.S. living with his first sponsor family in Chicago. After 6 months of frigid weather Scotty was relocated to a family in sunny Orange County, California where he attended school.
After reminiscing child-hood thoughts of Las Vegas, at the age of 19, on a whim Scotty drove out to Las Vegas, and never turned back! He found employment as a bus-boy, cleaning tables at the Holiday Inn, which is now Harrah’s. Due to his name being difficult to pronounce, his boss is credited to giving him the famously known name of “Scotty”. After two years of bussing tables, Scotty went to poker dealer school and learned how to deal the game. He dealt cards for a short time, then tried his luck at the tables only to find himself back behind the poker tables dealing. Scotty went through many ups and downs financially and found himself back to dealing cards on numerous occasions. After 2 years of on and off dealing and playing Scotty, finally was able to quit dealing and start playing poker full-time. Since then, he has lost and amassed his bankroll numerous times in poker, yet he’s always overcame it, and never took on another job.
Throughout his career, Scotty has consistently found himself on top of the poker world for many consecutive year’s. With accumulating over $11,250,000.00 (USD) in live tournament winnings, and 47 1st place finishes under his belt, Scotty has cashed in over 250 live tournaments, holds 5 W.S.O.P. bracelets, with 39 W.S.O.P. cashes and 18 W.S.O.P. final table appearances, along with 3 W.P.T. Bracelets, 16 W.P.T. cashes, and 8 W.P.T. final table appearances. Scotty holds the the world’s most coveted titles in poker; the 1998 Main Event W.S.O.P. Champion title, 2006 W.P.T. Champion title, 2008 W.S.O.P. $50k H.O.R.S.E. Champion title, and the 2009 W.S.O.P. $10k H.O.R.S.E. Champion title. Scotty’s 1998 W.S.O.P. Main Event final table was the first in WSOP history to have the final table start with 5 players instead of the traditional 6, due to Scotty knocking out 6th and 7th place finishers in one hand the day before. He is also the first in W.P.T. history to win a tournament in one hand (2006). Scotty is also the only W.S.O.P. Main Event Champion (1998) to have won the coveted W.S.O.P. $50k H.O.R.S.E Event (2008). His 1998 W.S.O.P. winning hand led to be one of the most memorable poker phrases of all time when a full house was dealt on the table, and Scotty told his opponent, “You call, it’s gonna be all over, baby!”, he called, saying, “I call, I play the board.” only to find out Scotty was holding a bigger full house with JD9C for the win. Scotty has also coined the phrase, “that’s poker, baby!”
The release of That’s Poker Baby! Vol. 1 will be succeeded by more volumes containing the various techniques of successful poker playing strategy. This volume, along with all the others to come, include personal experiences in Scotty’s life that have taught him the lessons he is passing onto you. At the conclusion of final volume release, the most anticipated life story of Scotty will be released separately and as Scotty promised....written by a fan.
